A disappointing result at home

Fakenham took on Wisbech at the Stringer Ground for the fifth round of London 3 Eastern Counties fixtures. After a few disappointing results, they were looking to get their season back on track with a win at home.

Fakenham started the game strongly, tackling well in defence to stop the Wisbech players from making too much ground. There were a number of knock ons leading to scrums, which Fakenham dominated, a pattern that would continue throughout the game. After some well worked phases, Fakenham got the ball to full back Brett Stolworthy on the left hand side, who stepped back inside one defender before stretching out to score the game’s first try. The conversion was added by second row Joe Bane-Young.

Fakenham failed to deal with the kick off and Wisbech regained possession. They kept onto the ball well and after a number of phases worked their way into the Fakenham 22. After some sustained pressure, Wisbech crashed over. The conversion was unsuccessful.

This was the start of a period of dominance for the away side as they continued to play in the Fakenham half and after holding onto the ball well again, their tight head prop went over for a second Wisbech try, which was converted.

Towards the end of the first half, Wisbech continued to press, with wave after wave of attacks in the Fakenham 22. However, the defence was solid and kept Wisbech at bay until full back Brett Stolworthy intercepted a pass in his own 22 and, being chased down by a number of players, ran 90 metres to score under the posts. The conversion was good from fly half Luke Boynes and was the last act of the half, leaving the half time score at 14 – 12 to Fakenham.

Wisbech started the second half on the front foot. However the Fakenham defence held firm, winning turnovers and clearing their lines. Nonetheless, Wisbech kept coming back and, after some sustained pressure, found a way through once again, with the conversion successful.

Fakenham looked to answer immediately, attacking the Wisbech line consistently. The pattern for the remainder of the game was set, with Fakenham camped in the Wisbech half, met with stern defence. The away side could never fully clear their lines and Fakenham’s dominance in the scrums meaning they turned over the Wisbech put in on a few occasions and kept them pinned in their own half. Despite their control of field position and possession, Fakenham could not make it count and the game finished as a number of attacks had, with a knock on.

The final score was 14 – 19, a disappointing result for Fakenham, but credit to Wisbech for their strong defensive effort at the end. As they have done all season, the Fakenham players kept working hard until the end. Fakenham’s Barsham Brewery Man of the Match was full back Brett Stolworthy, scorer of both tries, who also put in good hits and took on defenders throughout the game.

Next week sees the 1st XV at home again, welcoming Thetford to the Stringer Ground for a 3pm kick off. The boys need a positive result next week, come down and give your support. There is a pre match luncheon with a few spaces left, so get in touch if you want to get involved.
