Fakenham's eighteenth league game of the season saw them travel to Thorney, their final away game.
Fakenham had won two games at home against Thorney quite comfortably before Christmas, one in the league and one in the cup, but knew they would be a tougher proposition at home.
Thankfully the rain stayed away and the sun was shining, but a strong wind ran down the length of the pitch played havoc at kick offs.
Having started slowly in recent weeks, Fakenham needed to turn it around this week and get an early score themselves. Returning winger Trent Stoltz got on the end of a flowing move before chipping over the top, regathering his kick and dotting down wide on the right. Fly half Lloyd Marshall couldn't add the conversion from the touchline in incredibly difficult conditions.
The home side soon evened things up with their own unconverted try.
Fakenham regained the lead almost immediately, as number eight Connor Robinson ran a strong line to burst through the middle and showed an impressive turn of pace to run in from just inside the Thorney half. Marshall was successful with the more straightforward conversion attempt.
Soon after, Thorney once more drew level through a converted try, making it 12 - 12.
The away side then scored their third try through full back Murray Tindal, using his pace and strong fend to get away from the covering defense after breaking through. Marshall nailed the conversion from the right of the posts.
Yet again, Thorney weren't behind for long. They scored their third try and hit the conversion to even the scores, keeping the fans entertained with the back and forth encounter.
Tindal scored his second try for Fakenham soon after, in similar fashion to his first, with Marshall once more slotting the conversion.
Just before half time, Fakenham broke the scoring pattern and scored again, to take their lead beyond one score for the first time. Stoltz scored his second, which Marshall converted to make the half time score 19 - 33.
The away side started the second half as they'd finished the first, scoring another try. After some good interplay down the right wing, outside centre Aaron Tagg broke away and sold a dummy to the final defender before diving over to the right of the posts. Marshall nailed the conversion once again.
Thorney soon fired back and secured the bonus point with their fourth try, although this one went unconverted.
Fakenham continued to attack and scored once more, this time through second row Pat Casey. After some good work at close proximity, the ball was worked out to Casey, who found the sea open in front of him and he trotted underneath the posts to score. Marshall slotted the straightforward conversion.
The home side continued to fight fire with fire and scored again through a big carry that crashed over the line, though the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Fakenham had the final say. The ball was worked wide to the right, where Tagg showed his pace to get over in the corner. Marshall couldn't add the conversion from the touchline.
There was just enough time for the restart, but the ball went dead without any more action and so the final whistle went with the score 29 - 57.
The Barsham Brewery Man of the Match went to number eight Connor Robinson. He put in some powerful runs, including for his try, and some big shots in defence.
There is no game next week, but the boys return to action in their penultimate league game at home to Mersea Island the week after. Come down and support the boys as they look to finish the season on a high.
