Fakenham's seventeen league game of the season saw them host Wisbech at the Stringer Ground.
Wisbech won the reverse fixture earlier in the season, so were looking to do the double, while Fakenham were aiming to overturn the previous result.
A pre-match luncheon and sunny weather provided for a big crowd looking to be entertained.
The away side started strongly, taking control of territory and possession. Whilst Fakenham's defence held fast at first, it was Wisbech that eventually made their pressure tell, getting the first try of the game in the tenth minute. A successful conversion followed.
Despite intent from both sides, there were no more scores before the break as knock ons were prevalent on both sides, leaving it 0 - 7 at half time.
Wisbech started the second half as strongly as the first and got their second converted try eight minutes in.
Fakenham soon shot back, as hooker George Rolland-Barry got his first try for the club, powering over from close range, wide on the right. Fly half and captain Lloyd Marshall was unable to add the tricky conversion.
Fifteen minutes later, Wisbech got their third try. A bust through the middle in broken play and some good hands and interplay by a number of players resulted in their outside centre going over. This time the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Fakenham continued to attack, hoping to get at least a losing bonus point. However, as the clock went dead, the away side regained possession and worked their way down the pitch, making use of penalties against the home side. They then brought their power game and, despite the best efforts of the Fakenham defence, crashed over after a number of pick and gos on the try line. With that, the try bonus was scored and a successful conversion from just to the left of the posts signalled the end of the game.
The final score was 5 - 26. Neither side was at their best, with both teams guilty of several knock ons and gifting the ball back to their opponents. Wisbech were deserved winners, making the most of their possession.
A big mention to Fakenham's inexperienced tight 5, who put in a massive shift against a bigger and more seasoned pack at scrums, of which there were a million. It felt like there were a million at least.
The Barsham Brewery Man of the Match went to two players; scrum half Harry Richardson and flanker Howard Kellock. Both boys put in huge efforts, with Harry controlling proceedings and making good choices of pass selection, while Howard carried and tackled selflessly once again.
Thank you to Bayfield Catering for the lovely pre-match luncheon enjoyed by the sizeable crowd.
Thank you to Katering 4U for providing the match teas for the players.
Next week sees Fakenham travel to Thorney for another significant game. Having beaten them twice at home already this season, in the league and cup, Fakenham will be looking to complete the trilogy, though they know it will be a tough fixture.
