Fakenham's eighth game of the league season saw them travel to Wisbech for what is always a tough fixture.
Heavy rainfall prior to the warm up left the pitch and ball a little greasy, but the conditions for the game were fair.
The home side started strongly, with a lineout five metres from the Fakenham line collected cleanly and driven over for the first score. A successful conversion gave Wisbech a 7 - 0 lead.
Fakenham struck back immediately with a maul try of their own after a close range lineout. Hooker Rory Singleton took control at the back to get his name on the score sheet when the maul crossed the try line. Fly half and Captain Lloyd Marshall hit the impressive conversion from wide on the left to level things up.
Fakenham then continued to press and were attacking in their opponents’ 22 when the Wisbech outside centre read the play well to intercept the ball. He then showed good pace and staying power to run in the try from his own 22, diving under the posts to set up an easy conversion.
Wisbech then furthered their advantage with their third try. A number of strong carries from close range eventually saw them crash over the line on the left hand side. This time the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
No more scores before half time meant Wisbech led 19 - 7 at the break.
Fakenham had a number of opportunities in the second half, but could not make them count, as they let their opponents off by losing the ball or giving away a penalty.
Wisbech had a period of possession and territory but some stellar defensive work from Fakenham kept them at bay.
However, a penalty gave Wisbech the chance to kick for goal. The successful shot took their lead to 15 points and crucially, three scores ahead.
Fakenham had to chase the game at this point and came unstuck just a few minutes after the penalty kick. A Fakenham return kick from deep was shanked somewhat, and Wisbech had numbers around the ball to reclaim it, before kicking through and winning the footrace to score their bonus point try. The difficult conversion from wide on the left was missed.
There were no more scores and so the final whistle was blown with the score 27 - 7.
A deserved win for Wisbech, who were more clinical with their chances and controlled the game well.
Fakenham come away very frustrated, knowing the game was closer than the score suggested and that they were the architects of their own downfall in large parts.
The Barsham Brewery Man of the Match went to scrum half Harry Richardson, who worked hard throughout the game to keep his side going forwards and put in a number of good tackles in defence.
Next week sees Fakenham host Thorney at the Stringer Ground, so come and support the boys as they look to bounce back.
