Fakenham's fourth league game of the season saw them host Wymondham II at the Stringer Ground. A sell out pre-match luncheon, sponsored by The Norfolk Agents and provided by Bayfield Catering, swelled the crowd.
Before the fixture, Wymondham sat one point and one place above Fakenham in the league table. Games between these sides have been exciting over the past couple of seasons and this promised to be another thrilling installment.
The home side started the brightest, with fly half Lloyd Marshall crossing for his side’s first try in the opening five minutes. He proceeded to convert his own try.
Ten minutes later Fakenham doubled their lead, with Marshall turning provider as he offloaded to inside centre Murray Tindal, who crashed over with two players hanging onto him. Marshall slotted the conversion.
Wymondham fought back in the quarter of an hour before half time, scoring two converted tries to level things up at the break, 14 - 14.
Fakenham retook the lead ten minutes into the second half through the boot of Marshall, as he nailed a penalty kick.
Wymondham struck back with an unconverted try to take the lead for the first time late in the second half, 17 - 19.
However, this didn't last long as Marshall's kicking came to the fore once more, slotting another penalty to give the home side a one point lead.
As the game drew to a close, Fakenham extended their lead as winger Lewis Wall went over in the corner, doing well to ground the ball under pressure from a couple of Wymondham defenders. Marshall couldn't add this difficult conversion from wide on the right.
Wymondham were within a score, but they couldn't get through the home defence and the final whistle went with Fakenham victorious, 25 - 19.
A good result for Fakenham that sees them leapfrog their opponents in the table.
The Barsham Brewery Man of the Match went to fly half Lloyd Marshall, who had an impressive personal points tally of 15.
