Walking Rugby Starts 1st May

In our February Newsletter we announced the forming of a new group for Walking Rugby. Walk-ing Rugby is a relatively new sport, and Fakenham will be the first club in Norfolk, with only Lowestoft playing locally. In celebration of the start the session will be free with a snack and cold drink also donated by the club.

What is Walking Rugby?

Jeffrey Pearce said following his attendance at Lowestoft sessions that Walking Rugby is a really fun team game that is accessible to people of all ages and abilities. It was attended by ex-players and those who were completely new to the game including a good number of ladies. Walking Rugby is a much simpler version than traditional game of rugby and therefore less physical and it is all about the enjoyment of the par-ticipants.
All sessions will start and finish with some gentle warm-up and warm-down exercises to help with overall fitness levels. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the pace and competitiveness of the game, while former rugby or net-ball players will welcome the flexibility walking rugby offers. As the name suggests, players must walk, not run but it can still be played at a good pace.

Who is Walking Rugby For?

This is a game both sexes, all abilities and is suitable for any-one over 40. Since it is a com-petitive passing game, it is par-ticularly suitable for ex-Rugby and Netball players, injured and rehabilitating current play-ers and those interested in Rugby but without any experi-ence!
Those past retirement age can still indulge in their passion without the full-on contact - and those wishing to keep up their activity levels can try a new sport. Walking Rugby is a great leveller and players don’t need to be fit – as the club will help newcomers with their fit-ness.

Kit and Equipment

Players need no specialist equipment, but participants must wear suitable clothing. Sessions will take place on the pitch and no studs/boots are required, just trainers. Sessions will only last an hour.

Eastern Counties Gives the Club Development Grant for Walking Rugby

John Winders of Eastern Counties has just con-firmed to a very pleased Jeffrey Pearce that the club has secured a grant of £240.00 to fund the equipment needed to start Walking Rugby. This will enable us to buy the Bibs, balls and cones needed to kick-off the sessions. The grant has been given in recognition of our efforts to attract new players of both sex-es across a wide age spectrum.

When Will Walking Rugby Start?

Walking Rugby will start on Wednesday 1st May will continue every Wednesday into the winter months if there is a demand.

Junior Rugby—Seasons Report

After a poor start to the season, when it seemed there were more coaches than players on Sun-days the group has finished on a high note. There are now have up to 20 youngsters attending most Sundays and as a result the club has been able to enter a team in many festivals for the Under 10s. We have also managed to pick up a few competitive games, two of which were played at home.
At one over event over 100 players attended. The club will be attending the Norwich Festival on the 28th April and on 5th May will be providing a demonstration game at Rudham Fete.
On the 12th May at 10 o’clock the club will be holding our Mini’s Presentation and would welcome anyone who would like to attend.
Clive Dew after is standing down at the end of the season sterling service and would like to thank all those who have helped over the years as the club can’t function nor would it have seen the improvements made without that support.
Finally, Clive wishes the new team well for the coming season.

Senior Team’s Reports

First XV

The First team were promoted last season into London North East 3 (Eastern Counties), and this has meant a higher standard of rugby for them to contend with. The early season saw many changes to the side with some sizable defeats to three of the top five clubs in the final league standings.
However, when the squad finally had all players available for selection, they were very much more competitive; pushing all their opponents irrespective of their league position and winning their fair share of games. The fighting spirit shown even when losing was commendable.
One of the highlights of the season was beating local rivals Holt (newly promoted to London NE2) in both the home and away league fixtures. It is fair to say the crowd at both games saw Holt leaving with glum faces. The team has grown and improved throughout the season winning 55% of the league fixtures and finishing fifth in the league; a fantastic achievement in their first season at this higher level.
The first team squad is looking forward to next season and plan to start their preparation early in the summer. The start of pre-season training will be published in the press and on social media and will be open to all existing club players, former players returning to the club and any new players wishing to join a progressive forward-looking rugby club.

Second XV

The second team have had a frustrating season with only 7 games played and the remainder called off.
Fakenham were responsible for 3 call offs due to lack of players, the planned opposition called of 12 games the majority when Fakenham seconds had a full squad or enough to play the game.
Towards the end of the season the team sustained a few injuries which are likely to take until next season to heal which will leave us short for the final two games. Alan Young would like to thank all players who have played second team rugby. Many players have had to step-up at times this season to play in the first team squad; well done you guys for your commitment to the club.
